Mathematician, physicist, and U.S. Surveyor General. Primarily correspondence between Mansfield and his wife, Elizabeth (Phipps) Mansfield, relating mostly to personal and family matters, but containing descriptions of Ohio and Indiana, and occasional references to national politics and Mansfield's duties as Surveyor General. Includes a few papers of Mrs. Mansfield's father, David Phipps, and 36 letters from Daniel Drake (1785-1852) to his father, Isaac Drake; his brother, Benjamin Drake; and Mansfield, containing observations on the War of 1812 and his medical practice.
